Immigration 800 number is an automotive system that provides updates on alien’s case processing dates such as next hearing date; status of the case; immigration clock…
To use it, the person must know the A number of the subject of the call. There is no name directory available. The A number is a 9 digit number assigned to every alien who has applied for immigrant benefits. A person who has never been in immigration proceedings or never applied for any other benefits than a non-immigrant visa would not have an A number, unless such a person is placed in Immigration proceedings. The system is available in both English and Spanish languages. An A number is typically found on Notice to Appear; Immigration Detainer; or correspondence from USCIS.
The system is usually available 24/7 apart from the times when is it under scheduled maintenance. It is a good tool to check your case date and time. However, a person should be mindful, that sometimes the information in the system is not accurate. It is especially true for “old” cases. In such a case, a person must seek attorney’s advice to make sure that he/she will not be subjected to deportation/removal.
